Loudest Voice is not the Voice to be Listened always.

There are two kinds of Patriots in Sri Lanka.

One is the silent kind who really understands the real meaning of patriotism and does everything that is possible in their own small ways to ensure that no harm is done to their beloved country.

The other kind is the most vocal and most loud kind.

They show their patriotism only in public but do not thing to keep their country away from harm’s way.

The loud and vocal kind is seasonal, like flu.

They appear like mushrooms after a rain, when something perceived to be harmful to the country only.

Let me explain this a little more.

Take the recent Geneva meet and the subsequent voting.

The social networks and blogs were awash with them publically bullshitting patriotism.

The vote is over now and none of them are anywhere to be seen again until the next rain.

The reputation, integrity etc of any country can be harmed in two ways.

First is an external threat and the second is internal threat.

External threats can be negated with diplomacy and even with war but the internal one is not.

It is like a cancer within and even an amputation too sometimes would not bring the desired effects.

These Patriot Bull-shitters are happy to tolerate the rampant corruption within the country which is throttling any likely positive development in any foreseeable future, but are happy to maintain their silence.

In my view; maintaining silence is endorsing corruptions.

Instead of bull-shitting in public when an external threat is likely to come, they should put their loud voices to talk about the internal threats too.

Stop bull-shitting in public and please do your bits to save the country.

Do not expect some outsider to come and clean the mess that we have created ourselves.

කරපිංචා ගැන නොදත් තතු

විස රසායන උරාගන්නා හොද්දේ කරපිංචා කෑම හොඳ නෑ.

වර්තමානයේදී ලාංකීය සමාජය තුළ පිළිකා, වකුගඩු ආදි රෝගාබාධවලට ගොදුරු වූවන් බහුල වී ඇත. බොහෝ දෙනෙකුගේ මතය වන්නේ අප ගන්නා ආහාරවල තිබෙන වස විස ඉහත රෝග බහුල වීමට හේතු වී ඇති බවය. එය බොහෝ දුරට සැබෑවක් විය හැකිය. අද අපට වෙළෙඳ පොළෙන් මිලදී ගැනීමට සිදුවී ඇත්තේ අධික ලෙස කාමිනාශක, වල් නාශක යෙදු එළවළු සහ පලතුරුය.

වස විස නොයෙදූ ආහාර ලෙස කෑමට තිබෙන්නේ කොස් දෙල් වැනි දේ පමණි.

වස විස නැතැයි පැවසෙන කාබනික පොහොර යොදා සැකසූ එළවළු වර්ග වෙළෙඳ පොළෙහි නැතිවා නොවේ. එහෙත් ඒවායේ මිල අධිකය. කෙසේ හෝ අද අප සමාජයේ බහුතරයකට කෑමට සිදු වී තිබෙන්නේ වස විස යෙදූ ආහාරය.

වස විසෙන් තොරව ආහාර ද්‍රව්‍ය වගා කරන්නේ කෙසේ ද? එසේම වස විස පහව යන පරිදි ආහාර ද්‍රව්‍ය පිළියෙල කරගන්නේ කෙසේ ද කියා අපේ මුතුන් මිත්තෝ ඉතා හොඳින් දැන සිටියහ. එසේම දේශීය වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රමයේ ද වස විසෙන් තොරව ආහාර පිළියෙල කරගන්නේ කෙසේදැයි සඳහන් වේ. ස්වභාවික ද්‍රව්‍ය වන කුළුබඩු යොදා පෝෂ්‍යදායි විස රහිත ආහාර පිළියෙල කිරීමේ සංස්කෘතියක් අප සතුය. සිංහල වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රමයේ ද ආහාර පිළියෙල කිරීම සඳහා යොදා ගන්නා කුළුබඩුවල තිබෙන වටිනාකම මනා ලෙස සඳහන් කර තිබේ. දේශීය වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රමයට අනුව කුළුබඩු අයත් වන්නේ “ආහාර යෝගී” ද්‍රව්‍ය ගණයටය. සිංහල වෙදකම පිළිබඳව විස්තර වන “චරක සංහිතාව” නම් ග්‍රන්ථයේ ආහාර වර්ග 11 ක් පිළිබඳව සඳහන් වේ. ඒ ශාක වර්ගය, ඵල වර්ගය, හරිත වර්ගය, ආහාර යෝගී වර්ගය.... ආදි වශයෙනි. මේ අතරින් කුළුබඩු අයත් වන්නේ ආහාර යෝගී වර්ගයටය.

කරපිංචා - මේද හරණී ගුණය

අපේ කුළුබඩු මුළු මහත් ලෝකයෙහිම ප්‍රසිද්ධය. අප භාවිත කරන කුළුබඩු අතරට ද්‍රව්‍ය ගණනාවක්ම අයත් වේ. කරපිංචා සහ රම්පෙ එලෙස කුළුබඩු අතරට අයත් වන ආහාර යෝගී ද්‍රව්‍යයන් දෙවර්ගයකි. කරපිංචා සහ රම්පෙ වර්තමානයේදී බොහෝ සේ කතාබහට ලක්වන්නට පටන්ගෙන තිබේ. විශේෂයෙන්ම කරපිංචා පිළිබඳව. ඒ කරපිංචා සතු විස නැසීමේ ගුණය සහ කොලෙස්ටරෝල් මේදය ශරීරයෙන් අඩු කිරීමේ ගුණය පිළිබඳවය.

දේශීය වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රමයේදී මෙය හඳුන්වනු ලබන්නේ මේද හරනී ගුණය ලෙසය. ඒ සඳහා බහුලව භාවිත වන්නේ කරපිංචා කොළ කැඳය. කරපිංචා කොළවලින් සාදාගන්නා කැඳ පානය කළ නොහැකි නම් වෙනත් ඖෂධීය කොළ වර්ගයකින් කැඳ සාදන විට කරපිංචා කොළ යම් ප්‍රමාණයක් එයට එක්කර කොළ කැඳ සාදා ගත හැකිය. එසේම කරපිංචා, සුදු ලූනු, ගොරකා, උළුහාල් සහ කුරුඳු ස්වල්පයක් ගෙන දියෙන් අඹරා සාදාගන්නා මිශ්‍රණය ලුණු දෙහි වැනි ආහාර රුචිය වඩවන උත්තේජකයක් ලෙස ද යොදා ගත හැකිය.

රුධිර කැටි ගැසීම වළකයි

කටුක රසයෙන් යුතු කුරුඳු කරපිංචා වැනි කුළුබඩුවල ශරීරයේ රුධිර කැටි ඇතිවීම වැළැක්වීමේ ගුණය ඇති බව මීට වසර හයදහසකට පමණ පෙර පටන් අපේ මුතුන්මිත්තන් දැන සිටි බව චරක සංහිතාවනම් දේශීය වෙදකම පිළිබඳව ලියැවුණු ග්‍රන්ථයේ සඳහන් වේ.

කරපිංචා සම්බෝලය

සර්පයකු දෂ්ට කළ විට අපේ පැරැණියන් දුන්නේ කරපිංචා කැඳය. කරපිංචා කැඳ සාදා ගන්නේ කරපිංචා කොළ යම් ප්‍රමාණයකට සහල් සහ පොල් කිරි මිශ්‍ර කර පිළියෙල කර ගැනීමෙනි. අද ද සර්පයකු දෂ්ට කළ විට කරපිංචා කැඳ බීමට දෙන්නේ කරපිංචා සතු විස නැසීමේ මහගු ගුණය හේතුවෙනි. එසේම භූමිතෙල් වැනි ශරීරයට විස ගෙන දෙන ද්‍රව්‍යයන් ශරීරගත වූ විට ද කරපිංචා කැඳ බීමට දෙන්නේ කරපිංචා සතු එම විස නැසීමේ ගුණය නිසාය. කරපිංචාවලින් සාදා ගන්නා සම්බෝලය ශරීරයට ඉතා ගුණ දෙන කොලෙස්ටරෝල් මේදය ශරීරයෙන් ඉවත් කිරීමේ හැකියාව ඇති ආහාරයකි.

විස නසන ඇඹුල් තියල්

ගොඩබිම තිබෙන විස සියල්ල අවසානයේදී ගමන් කරන්නේ මහ මුහුදටය. එම විස, මුහුදෙන් අල්ලාගන්නා මාළුන් තුළ ද යම් පමණකට ඇත. මාළු ඇඹුල් තියල් ලෙස සකසන්නේ මාළුවල තිබෙන එම විස ඉවත් කිරීමටය. ඇඹුල් තියල් මිශ්‍රණයට ගොරකා, ගම්මිරිස් මෙන්ම කරපිංචා ද අයත් වේ. ඇතැමුන් ඇඹුල් තියල් මිශ්‍රණය දැවටු මාළු කැබලි වළඳෙහි තබන්නේ කරපිංචා කොළ තට්ටුවක් උඩින්ය. එලෙස සකසන ලද මාළුවල තිබෙන ඇඹුල් තියල් මිශ්‍රණය ඉවත් කර මාළු කැබලි ආහාරයට ගත හැකිය. මෙහිදී ද භාවිත වන්නේ කරපිංචා සතු විස නැසීමේ ගුණයයි.

කරපිංචා සතු මහඟු ගුණ එසේ වුවද ව්‍යංජනවල තිබෙන කරපිංචා කොළ ආහාරයට ගැනීම පිළිබඳව දෙවරක් සිතිය යුතු බවට නවතම මතයක් සමාජයේ ඇතිවී ඇත. ඒ පිළිබඳව පර්යේෂණ කළ විද්වතුන්ගේ අදහස වන්නේ කෘෂි රසායන යොදා වගා කරන ලද එළවළු ආහාර ලෙස පිළියෙල කිරීමේදී කරපිංචා යොදාගත් විට එම එළවළුවල තිබෙන විස ද්‍රව්‍ය කරපිංචා කොළවලට උරාගත හැකි බවය. මෙම තත්ත්වය වඩාත් බරපතළ සහ භයානක වන්නේ එළවළුවල නැවුම් බව ආරක්ෂා කර ගැනීම සඳහා එළවළු නෙළීමට දවසකට පමණ පෙර ඇතැම් ගොවීන් කෘමිනාශක යෙදීමට පෙලඹී ඇති නිසාය. එබැවින් ගෙවත්තෙන් නෙළාගන්නා එළවළු පිළියෙල කරගන්නා අවස්ථාවලදී හැර ව්‍යංජනයේ තිබෙන කරපිංචා ආහාරයට නොගැනීම වඩාත් සුදුසුය. එහෙත් නිවෙසේදී සාදාගන්නා ලද කිරි හොද්දේ තිබෙන කරපිංචා කොළය කිසිසේත්ම විසි කළ යුතු නැත.

ආහාර සුවඳවත් කිරීමට යොදාගන්නා රම්පෙ පිළිබඳව ද එවැනිම මතයක් ඉදිරිපත් වී ඇත. රම්පෙ යොදා ගන්නේ කිසියම් ආහාරයකින් ප්‍රසන්න සුවඳක් ලබා ගැනීමටය. බොහෝ ගෘහිණියෝ බත පිසීමේදී රම්පෙ කොළ කැබැල්ලක් බතට එක් කිරීමට පුරුදුව සිටිති. එයින් බතට ප්‍රිය උපදවන සුවඳක් ලැබේ. ඇතැම් ව්‍යංජන පිසීමේදී ද රම්පෙ කොළ කැබැල්ලක් යොදා ගැනීමට ගෘහිණියෝ පුරුදු වී සිටිති. ව්‍යංජනයක් පිසීමේදී අධික උෂ්ණත්වයට පත්වූ විට එහි කිසියම් විසක් තිබේ නම් එම විස ද්‍රව්‍ය ක්‍රියාකාරී වී රම්පෙ කැබැල්ලට උරා ගැනීමේ හැකියාවක් ඇත. වඩාත් සුදුසු වන්නේ ව්‍යංජනය ළිපෙන් බා ගත් පසුව රම්පෙ කැබැල්ල ඉවත් කිරීමය. එසේ නොවුණහොත් රම්පෙ කැබැල්ලේ තිබෙන විස ද්‍රව්‍යයන් නැවත ව්‍යංජනයට එක්විය හැකිය.

විස නසන මුරුංගා කොළ

මුරුංගා කොළ සතුව ද විස නැසීමේ ගුණයක් ඇත. ඉස්සන් පිසින විට මුරුංගා දළු ස්වල්පයක් යොදා ගන්නේ එබැවිනි. මුරුංගාවල කැල්සියම් බහුලය. කැල්සියම් අපේ ශරීරයට ඉතා අවශ්‍ය වන පෝෂක ද්‍රව්‍යයකි. එහෙත් මුරුංගා කොළවලින් කොළ කැඳ සාදා බීම පිළිබඳව නැවත සිතා බැලිය යුතුය. විශේෂයෙන්ම මුරුංගා කොළ කැඳවල තිබෙන රසායන ද්‍රව්‍ය කුඩා දරුවනට දරා ගත නොහැකිය. මුරුංගා කොළ කැඳ පානය කළ දරුවන් කීප දෙනෙකු වෙතින් ඔක්කාරය සහ තවත් රෝග ලක්ෂණ පෙන්නුම් කර ඇත්තේ එබැවිනි. මුරුංගා කොළ සහ දළු ආහාර පිසීමේදී යොදා ගැනීම වරදක් නොවුවද මුරුංගා කොළවලින් කොළ කැඳ සාදා පානය කිරීම එතරම් සුදුසු නැත. දේශීය වෛද්‍ය ක්‍රමය තුළ ද මුරුංගා කොළ කැඳ පිළිබඳව සඳහන් නොවන්නේ එබැවිනි.

නෙළුම් අල ව්‍යංජනයක් ලෙස සකසා ආහාරයට ගැනීම පිළිබඳව ද අද විවිධ මත සමාජයේ ඇත. වර්තමානයේදී කුඹුරට යොදන විස රසායන ද්‍රව්‍ය වැවේ තිබෙන නෙළුම් ගසට උරා ගැනීමක් සිදු වේ. වෙළෙඳ පොළෙහි තිබෙන නෙළුම් අලය නි‍ෙවසට ගෙනැවිත් කෙළින්ම ව්‍යංජනයක් ලෙස සකසා ගත් විට නෙළුම් අලවල තිබෙන විස ද්‍රව්‍ය ශරීරගත විය හැකිය.

අපේ මුතුන් මිත්තන් නෙළුම් අල ව්‍යංජනය සැකසීමේදී විශේෂ ක්‍රමයක් අනුගමනය කළේ නෙළුම් අලවල ඇති විස ද්‍රව්‍ය ඉවත් කිරීමටය. ඔවුන් නෙළුම් අල ව්‍යංජනය සැකසුවේ මේ ආකාරයටය.

පළමුව නෙළුම් අල සිහින් පෙති ලෙස කපාගෙන කැකුළු සහල් මිටක් සහ ජලය දමා තම්බා ගනු ලැබේ. එහිදී කැකුළු සහල් සමඟ ඇති ජලයට නෙළුම් අලවල තිබෙන විස ද්‍රව්‍ය සහ බැර ලෝහ උරා ගනී. ඉන් පසු නෙළුම් අල කැබලි වෙන් කරගෙන කිරි දමා ව්‍යංජනය සකසා ගත හැකිය.

Modern-day Feudalism

Recently, I was involved in some heated discussions on one of the internet forums and some of the irritant topics to many that I brought to surface where the level of corruptions, lack of transparency, foreign debts and the efforts to smother the freedom of speech.

None of the participants were able to give any convincing answers, instead restored to whipping some other political parties, some other religious establishments and those who represent minorities’ interests up.

One personal experience I quoted was one of my friends was trying to bribe his daughter in to a super grade school in Colombo, when the same person openly says that the corruption is a thing in the past and the new man in the driving seat has already seen to it.

When confronted, why he then needed such an intervention, when everything is fixed already, he meekly said, otherwise she would be left behind (not the very same words).

His house is like a shrine dedicated to his man now on the driving seat, yet privately he has different agendas.

The same phenomenon was much evident, even during some of the heated discussions mentioned earlier.

Some were ready to portray Sri Lankan as one only second to the Heaven (not in religious terms but only figuratively speaking terms) and started whipping up the western and other developed nations blaming all our failures on them.

Yet most of the participants were happy to enjoy all the benefits derived from living in those decadent societies.

Why are they unable to return back to their place of birth and the country that they are so desperately trying to portray as the next best thing to the heaven, and sadly they too like my friend who was trying to bribe someone to get a placement for his daughter have thousand other vague excuses.

They live, work, send their kids to schools and universities there, have a comfortable life, enjoy the benefits of having placements based on merits than anything else, transparency and most importantly the freedom of speech, which most or all of them are non existence in the their so-called heaven.

This is what I see as the modern-day feudalism.

The Apple Polishers do not want their compatriots to know that there is another world far better and much different than theirs, beyond their tiny hamlets.

The moment when others come to know that there is another world beyond their hamlet is much better and open, they too would aspire to be there and or demand the same conditions in their tiny hamlets too.

Once that happened, the status quo would be broken.

The best example is the present Arab spring uprising engulfing most parts of the region.

Once the status quo is broken, many who preach so much rubbish but not put them in to practice know very well that their and their families places in the pecking order of the society would be drastically changed, not because of anything else but all what they enjoy today, have been obtained only thanks to the virulent and rampant corruptions (in one form or the other) in their heaven.

No Merit, No Transparency.

If the placements are based only on merits, many sarong clad children and young men from many tiny hamlets would overtake them like a Ferrari overtaking a Micro on a race track.

The outcome of such a contest is too obvious and needs no further elaborations.

Then why to upset the apple cart but enjoy polishing apples and preach rubbish which none of them have any idea of putting in to practice.

If they are really determined to see the country changes from its present position to a developed nation, then why so reluctant to come back and infuse whatever expertise that you have gained, while staying in those decadent societies.

Speak openly and oppose to corruptions and malpractices.

Demand placements solely based on merit and not on connections, wealth or any other criteria.

Most importantly preach only what you follow than the other way around.

During one such discussion, somebody mentioned that we need farsighted leaders.

I do not think that we need leaders in this century too.

What we only need is some capable people to represent us (Representatives and not Leaders) and to turn aspirations of the people in to realities than megalomaniacs to plunder the wealth of the people on legacy creating ventures and stifling aspirations of the people to ensure the continuity in their places in pecking order of the society for a long time to come.

(This was written a few years back and the man referred in the driving seat is no more as well. But the gist is even applicable to today's society too).

Garbage Segregation & Political Representation

Most of us know how we should manage our household garbage.

But when it comes to put them in to action, all what we do is to put everything in a one big plastic bag and throw it out of the car window in a secluded stretch of a road.

Later we bark at authorities for failing to clean up the mess.

Why can't we segregate plastic, tins, bottles, and cardboards, biodegradable stuffs etc at home itself?

It will take extra few minutes of our time in segregation but the benefits are far better at the end.

Better disposal of garbage will ultimately bring immense social benefits.

Plastics, tins, bottles etc have reusable value and by giving them to scavengers making house call from time to time can generate a small income too.

Same goes with; when it comes to selecting people to represent us.

Social media today is awash with so many suggestions.

Many are to bar anyone from entering politics and seeking representation; unless one has a minimum level of educational qualification.

Some suggest a university degree and some say O/L.

Having a degree of some sort and or O/L alone is not a good yardstick to measure someone's capability.

Looking back, seven decades of representation history in the country will not give us any clue to pin our hopes on.

Those who were with very flamboyant foreign and locally obtained educational qualifications had done equal or more harm with those who have had bare minimum level of exposure to quality education.

If the level of exposure to qualification is not a reliable yardstick, then what should be alternative measure?

Past behaviour is a very good indicator of what to come in future.

Ask hard questions.

How did that person come to this social standing?

What were his / her past contributions to the society in general?

Never be afraid of thinking aloud.

Social Media today is a very powerful tool.

Therefore; the responsibility of who should be sent and who should not be sent is only with us.

There is no point crying foul later after selecting an Ass to represent us in the first place.

Make the right choice now.

 

Happy Father's Day !

A text message I received from my daughter at a recent Father's Day celebration made me rethink my father.

How I described him was the main dilemma.

He was a man of a few words.

I have more of his physical appearance than my other siblings, but this quality of few words I was not endowed with.

My younger brother has received it from him (the universe has very mysterious ways of working and assembling things around it).

He showed us the world literally by taking us to various places during school holidays and breaks in between, but his world was just confined to within our shores.

By introducing and encouraging us to read early in our lives, he managed to take us far beyond his physically confined shores.

Every week, he used to bring at least two books from the library, and we were on them like the vultures on a carcass.

He wanted us to think freely and never be afraid of asking questions.

Though he was a man of few words, his political allegiance was no secret, with Das Capital prominently on the bookshelf.

With a rear show of emotions, he clenched his fist and held up in solidarity with his unseen brothers in some part of the world when the Nine o’clock SLBC News announced the departure of the last US helicopter from Vietnam.

We were having dinner in Badulla that day.

His message, though conveyed in a very subtle way but not in words, was “Never come home if you get beaten up by someone else, and the rest of the complications, if any, I can take care of.".

In simple words, it says, "Break the hell out of anyone who tries to intimidate you!".

He was a Southerner, and his words and deeds truly reflected the enterprising Southerners’ spirit.

His two messages, “Think Freely” and “Never come home if you get beaten up by someone else,” came in really handy in our later lives, but I do not think that any of us got around telling him how much we benefited from those two messages.

At least now we have such celebrations like “Father's Day," which we had never heard of when we were growing up. 

This allows me to at least say, “Thank You තාත්තේ !"

Newfound Patriotism - තමාට පෙර රට !

When we moved to our newly built house a few years back, we got a plaque with the සීවලී මහා රහතුන්ගේ picture as one of the housewarming gifts from someone.

So we decided to hang it on the outside Wall and not inside.

Seeing it there, a few neighbors and some of our friends were surprised.

We were new to the area so the neighbors were somewhat reluctant to come directly and express their opinion on this සීවලී මහා රහතුන්ගේ plague being hung outside the house than inside.

The friends were more vociferous than them.

“ Hey, it should be hung inside the house and not outside “.

The belief was that it will bring blessing and prosperity to the dwelling.

The neighbours have thought that we were අන්‍ය ආගම්කාරයෝ and unknowingly have hung it on the outside wall.

Our rationale was that we already have enough for us to sustain decently and we want that Blessing and Prosperity for everyone alike to get as well.

I thought of writing this only after seeing that there is something brewing in some corner of the Social Media that every household should display a plaque or sticker " තමාට පෙර රට ".

I can understand like ours, their intention is very honorable too.

At the same time I could not help thinking, soon our house too would also look බස් එකක් වගේ.

Imagine with a සීවලී මහා රහතුන්ගේ picture plus so many proclamations to show off our newfound patriotism adorning our house’s front wall.

Should I change our house number too to route 138 to give the real feeling?

Terrorism and Rule of Engagement

Ever since man decided that the only way to achieve a solution to a dispute between two of them is to take up arms, the rules of engagement have changed.

They have evolved in a much slower pace that one would be able to keep abreast with it and be prepared for any eventuality.

However, the 9/11 incident has changed the whole scenario.

What are going on around in many parts of the world today are sufficient ample examples of the changes that have taken place in the rules of engagement.

The conventional wisdom and the old school rules of engagement become lead weights, especially when a country where democracy prevails tries to fight off a terrorist outfit, threatening the stability of the country as well as in the region.

The terrorists have only one objective and that is to terrorize and they would go to any extent to achieve their objective.

Unless the democratically elected governments change their tactics and approach to the issue of how to deal with the terrorists, the hope of having a Win is a total impossibility.

The best and the most recent example is the Sri Lankan Armed forces victory over the one time most dreaded and feared terrorist group.

Had they been listening to the hypocrites’ and old school pundits, as they have done for more than two decade, the terrorist menace would have gone for many more decades.

They were ready to change their rules of engagement and the success came within a few years.

The conventional wisdom and old school rules of engagement have to be abandoned, if to achieve success in a war especially between a democratically elected government and a foreign funded terrorist outfit.

The staunch old school guards and especially the hypocrites’ will try to place one obstacle after another to stop you from changing your stance but the sure recipe for success is to abandon the conventional wisdom and old rules of engagement.
