THE FORMATION OF LYNCH MOBS IS INEVITABLE SOON

Every time a serious crime is reported in the country, the subsequent revelation that there is a politician or someone close to him or her is involved is a common thing to hear these days.

Interestingly, it is only one political party that participates in such incidents, which is worth noting.

One incident was a group of robbers trying to snatch a hefty sum of money being brought to be deposited in a bank by a businessman, and the other was a group of hooligans savagely beating some students attending a tuition class.

In both cases, the direct involvement of the politician and/or one of his/her close relatives is evident.

If the public feels that the law and the apparatus there to enforce it are either inactive or not taking an impartial stand, taking the law into their own hands will be inevitable soon.

History is littered with atrocities committed by lynch mobs in other parts of the world, but luckily, nothing of that nature has ever been reported in Sri Lanka.

The formation of lynch mobs will be more dangerous than having a lawless society.

Therefore, forcing good governance is a better option than allowing the country to descend into a lynch mob culture society.

REDUCTION OF CEB SALARIES BY 30%

It is not a secret that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has never made any profits.

The public must always chip in by paying more taxes to cover their expenses by pumping money from the government coffers.

Another generator at the Norochchole plant has been shut down, and social media is rife with news that a 10-hour power cut is on the cards.

If that is true, the CEB income will be further reduced by more than 40%, and how do the authorities plan to bridge the gap?

Naturally, increasing taxes and tariffs is the only way they know, and we have no say or control over the matter.

How about reducing the salaries of the CEB, including the minister who is responsible, by at least 30% to bridge the shortfall?

If for some reason, when a household income drops, either the household will use their reserves to supplement the shortfall or take measures to reduce their expenditure accordingly to meet the situation.

In the case of CEB, as I said from the beginning, they have no reserves whatsoever, and therefore the only option now available to them is to make necessary cutbacks on their expenditures.

Such a measure would only affect some families (around 300,000 heads), but it would be negligible compared to raising taxes on the entire population.

Until they find a way to at least cover their expenditure, the shortfall amount should be adjusted by imposing prorated reductions in their employees’ salaries and not imposing more taxes on the entire population.

The same methodology should be applicable to all government-run entities with always have negative balances.

REVOCATION OF COAL TENDER AND HOW TO AVOID SUCH ANTIC IN FUTURE.

It is obvious that there is some behind-the-scenes work involved in the recent coal tender revocation.

Calling for a new tender allows opportunists to gain an unfair advantage and deceptive gains once more.

How to avoid such an incident occurring in the future is as paramount as securing the next consignment before the country falls again into total darkness.

Failing to fulfil the contractual obligations is a good reason not to release the deposited tender fee by the party who got it awarded.

The other steps are to ban and blacklist the company in question for life for participating in future tenders.

Blacklist the chairman and other company directors.

The purpose of the second measure is to avoid the same entity resurfacing under another name with the same bunch of crooks posing as directors etc.

Furthermore, those who have been blacklisted for a certain period will automatically lose their credibility and will not find any more directorships in other companies.

If no such blacklist exists currently, one similar to CRIB should be created immediately.

Is Suicide Endorsed in Buddhism ?

Taking one’s own life and or assisting another person to end his or her life has never been endorsed by the Buddha.

If that is the clear teaching, how come someone dressed in robes and claiming to be a monk openly threatens the authorities with immolation, if the electricity tariff for places of worship is not reduced?

It is clearly stated in the basic code of monastic discipline that the punishment for such an act is ex-communication for life.

Hence, there is no ambiguity in the teaching and why the concerned authorities are still silent and not taking the appropriate action against this person in robe.

Subjugation, Looting, Bashing & More Looting?

Colonial subjugation is no secret to many in the Indian subcontinent, and Sri Lanka is no different.

Talking about how much they have presumably looted from us is of no use now, after seven decades of independence.

There are many numbers circulating on many social media platforms suggesting the wealth taken away from us runs into billions of dollars.

How those numbers have been computed has no significance, but I have yet to see any credible number of the absolute value of the things the masters left behind for our use.

When the masters left, they left the country with no foreign loans taken in our name, and instead left a surplus of money in the treasury.

In fact, it is a known fact that Ceylon was able to loan some large sums of money to the United Kingdom to enable them to pay back some of the money borrowed to run the WW II effort.

They left us a functioning democracy.

very viable education, health, and legal systems.

Functioning rail and road transport systems.

Many airports are dotted around the country and two major harbour facilities.

we are not forgetting the fuel storage facility in Trincomalee.

I have seen many former Ceylon artefacts on display in London museums.

At least they are there for us to see and take some pride and consolation simultaneously.

Just imagine the plight of these artefacts if they were left in our care.

The Colombo Museum burglary and many other well-known artefacts have gone missing while they were in our care recently, which is no secret.

There are many more.

But what happened to those left for us to use and take care of?

Now it’s all in shambles.

Is it because they have taken away wealth from us or because we have squandered the facilities left for us to use, take care of, and improve later?

I see no reason to blame someone for their own mistakes.

Let us get our house in order first.

Improvement in the wealth of facilities left for our use can be addressed later.

Idiots Still Go Gaga !

This was what I penned when Sri Lanka won another Cricket cup, way back in 2014.
Nothing much has changed conditions-wise, except the situation has grown grim, yet some idiots still go Gaga, over a couple of sports wins.

What are we celebrating?
Can someone tell me, please?
Per Capita income is less than the US $ 2000
Not even 3% of the GDP is invested in
Neither Education nor health.

Spend more than SLR 100 Million a day
Just to glorify one person only
Corruption is endemic
And we are at the bottom end of the list
With Sudan and Afghanistan etc.

Winning T20 is not worth celebrating
I will join the crowds on the streets
Only when we beat Sweden and Singapore
In the list of least corrupt nations or
Invest at least 6% of the GDP in education and health
Limit spending to glorify one person
And uplift the Per Capita Income
At least to the US $ 5000.

Those are worth Celebrating and not just a T20 win
And who will remember it in a few weeks' time
What are we celebrating?
Can someone tell me, please?

Mona was a very handsome Jordanian girl who worked as a cabin crew member at Oman Air.

Once, I was dispatching a Colombo-bound flight in the middle of the night, and Mona oversaw the rear cabin on that flight.

Just before I closed the rear passenger door, I told "Mona" I needed a favour”.

She was always very obliging and asked, "Tell me, what is it?"

I knew well that there would be Sri Lankan newspapers' uplift from Colombo for the return sector, so I asked her,

"If you get time, can you secure a couple of local newspapers for me, please"?

She happily said, "No issue" and the flight was released on time because I had to come back again the following morning to handle the arrival as well.

When I met the aircraft and opened the rear door, she was beaming and gave me a thumbs-up to confirm her action.

After all the passengers alighted, she came to the front with a heap of local newspapers, and immediately I realized that there was something wrong.

All she managed to collect were Tamil newspapers, and not a single English or Sinhala paper was among them.

In true Sri Lankan spirit, I thanked her profusely and accepted them.

As the saying goes, never refuse even a Tamil newspaper if you are receiving it free of charge from someone.

I think the word "local" killed the bird on that occasion.
