Learning is Easy, Unlearning is Difficult

Learning is easy, but unlearning is far more difficult.

It is clearly stated in මජ්ජිම නිකාය that one should learn dharma to explore and live by it rather than to win arguments or persuade others.

I wonder how many of us are doing that.

I think I have said before that we have got lost in some translation issues.

For instance, the true meaning of කාලිහීන is කෙළෙස් නැසූ හෝ කෙළෙස් හීන කල

and not කාලීන, as many of us have been led to believe over the years by those in robes.

This is one reason why I shun sermons by those who are just wrapped in robes because I think I have nothing more to learn from them.

I rather learn something from a real master (someone who is කෙළෙස් නැසූ හෝ කෙළෙස් හීන කල) than try the same with someone who has not even started the very process of self-cleansing, but only pretending and jabbering things that he or she has no grasp of. 

The second question is, if liberation is this difficult, how did those without much formal education and/or background achieve it during Buddha's time?

I believe that liberation is simple, but many in robes are just making it look really complicated, like the quantum theory, simply for their own survival only.

Learning to let go is the right way and practising that continuously without hoping for anything in return, even liberation, will get you there and not listening to a thousand sermons.

The hardest obstacle to clear is "What if?" because fear will not let us attempt that, and if one masters the art of taming fear, then he or she will achieve real liberation.

You Owe Nothing !

Torrid Time or Brighter Future ?

ගලක් කලා කෘතියක් හෝ මාරාන්තික ආයුධයක් බවට පරිවර්තනය විය හැකිය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ සිදුවූයේ මෙයයි.

කලින් පාගා දැමූ සහ නොසලකා හරින ලද ගල්, දැන් කලා කෘති සහ සියලු දූෂණයට එරෙහිව විනාශකාරී ආයුධයක් බවට පරිවර්තනය වී ඇත.

සැක සහිත අතීතයක් ඇති මිනිසුන් දැන් මෙම පරිවර්තනයට බිය වෙති.

ඒවගේම හංගන්න දෙයක් නැති අය රැල්ල ආසාවෙන් වැළඳගෙන.

මෙය හැරවුම් ලක්ෂය සහ අනාගත දිශාව වනු ඇත.

ඔබට සැඟවීමට යමක් තිබේ නම් ආරක්ෂිත සැඟවී සිටින ස්ථානයක් සොයා ගැනීමට දැන්ම පටන් ගන්න.

වංචනිකයින්ට ඉදිරියේදී භයානක කාලයක් ලැබෙනු ඇත.

අනෙක් අයට කරදර වීමට කිසිවක් නැති අතර ඉදිරියේදී දීප්තිමත් අනාගතයක් අපේක්ෂා කළ හැකිය

A simple stone can be transformed into a work of art or a lethal weapon.

This is exactly what occurred in Sri Lanka.

Simple stones, which had previously been trodden on and ignored, have now been transformed into works of art and a destructive weapon against all corruption.

People with dubious pasts are now afraid of this transformation.

And those who have nothing to hide have embraced the wave with gusto.

This will be the turning point and future direction.

Embrace, support and flow with the tide, only if you have nothing to hide but start running from now on to find a safe hiding place if you have anything to hide.

Crooks will have a torrid time ahead.

Others have nothing to worry about and can expect a brighter future ahead.

Sri Lanka should encourage more backpackers to come now because their spending will go to grassroots levels immediately.

But the question is, will they be interested in visiting?

The only plus point for them is the high conversion rate (heard some, deployed by scion are paying exorbitant amounts for foreign currency in places like Hikkaduwa, Mirissa, Ella etc).

But is the inconvenience worthwhile for anyone?

Thanks to the existing set-up in the country, we cannot even get to the 2 million mark.

From the moment they land on this soil until their departure, everyone is trying to fleece them.

Yesterday, there was a video shared by a Vlogger where four young boys in Kandy were trying to misbehave with his female companion.

Unless the authorities are keen to clean up the system, reaching the 3 million mark will be a pipe dream only.

A Few Feathers Ruffled - Hegemony Threatened

Some people feel intimidated since the hegemony is eroding due to protests in Galle Face Green and other regions of the country, as they were formerly part of it.

"Leadership or supremacy, especially by one country or social group over others," is the definition of hegemony.

This is what has been happening in the country, and the younger generation is no longer buying into the premise that one group should not be able to rule others.

It was only conceivable yesterday for many reasons, but not now, owing to the information revolution, which allows you to perceive the world and your surroundings through completely new eyes.

I read somewhere that one of the monks has announced on his social media wall that they are going to lose their entitlement to reserved public transportation seats.

This is how many who have been brainwashed think.

Losing dominance over another and losing the entitlement to have a reserved seat on public transport is something else.

Getting acclimated to inclusivity is a better and more long-term option than exclusivity, which can lead to disaster.

It is preferable to be prepared to accept and welcome the new norm than to be forgotten and left behind.

It's entirely up to you.

Beware of Invisible Hands !

The people's protest at the Galle Face Green continues despite many obstacles for two weeks now.

Unfortunately, there have been incidents of violence and vandalism reported in some parts of the island during some of the sporadic protests sparked in some parts of the island.

The interesting question is, why was it not at the Galle Face green but at other locations?

Similar sorts of incidents have been reported during the so-called uprising of the southern youths in the latter part of the 80s.

Initially, the youths were blamed and held accountable by all, but later it was revealed that though the youths were partly responsible for some of those killings and vandalistic acts, the bulk was carried out by some goons with the blessing and the backing of the regime that was in power then.

Having seen some agitations turn into vandalistic action, the real protestors in Galle Face Green should be aware of infiltration and the ensuing avoiding violence within.

This was why I suggested in one of my previous blogs that the Galle Face green should not be a place for revellers but only for those who have a real concern about the country.

By being there for two weeks together, I am sure there must be some reporting structure already established and how to resolve pricking issues within the hitherto invisible hierarchy of reporting, monitoring and acting structure that exists.   

Be careful of so-called overtly friends supporters because I have seen so many known crooks have already gone there with a Lankan flag and posted pictures on their social media platforms.

The goal of this article is not to tell you how to do your own thing, but rather to warn you about the possibility of infiltrations and the need for a very discreet but effective screening, filtration, and elimination process if the struggle is to succeed in the end.

The peaceful protest going on at the famous Gall Face Green, Sri Lanka has now reached a critical point as no party is showing any signs of giving in or giving up.

ශ්රී ලංකාවේ සුප්රසිද්ධ ගාලු මුවදොර පිටියේ පැවැත්වෙන සාමකාමී විරෝධතාව මේ වන විට තීරණාත්මක ස්ථානයකට පැමිණ ඇත්තේ කිසිදු පාර්ශ්වයක් අත හැරීමේ හෝ අත්හැරීමේ සලකුණක් නොපෙන්වන බැවිනි.

With the government still holding on to power, despite losing its mandate, they plan another begging round, this time to the IMF and World Bank for assistance.

ආන්ඩුව තවමත් බලය අල්ලාගෙන සිටීම නිසා, එහි ජනවරම අහිමි වුවද, ඔවුන් තවත් හිඟමන වටයක් සැලසුම් කරයි, මෙවර IMF සහ ලෝක බැංකුවේ සහය සඳහා.

It was said that they expect around a 4 billion dollar loan to ease the current situation in the country.

Assuming that this sum is enough and granted in full, what next?

Eliminate power outages.

Make fuel easily accessible.

ඉන්ධන පහසුවෙන් ලබා ගැනීම.

Important items are made available.

අත්යවශ්ය ද්රව්ය පහසුවෙන් ලබා ගත හැකි ලෙස සකස් කිරීම.

Will the protestors give in if that is the scenario in a few weeks' time?

සති කිහිපයකින් තත්ත්වය එය නම් විරෝධතාකරුවන් ඉඩ දී ඉවත්ව යයිද?

My belief is that they will not because, first, they will have experienced the power of collective bargaining power, and second, their main agenda was not pricing reductions but good governance.

Price hikes and scarcities were the triggering points.

The real purpose of this protest is to ask for good governance only.

මේ විරෝධයේ සැබෑ අරමුණ යහපාලනය පමණක් ඉල්ලා සිටීමයි.

That is why they have not taken any political party’s support or their reach has gone beyond hitherto held bogus religious and race boundaries either.

ඔවුන් කිසිදු දේශපාලන පක්ෂයක සහය ලබා නොගෙන හෝ මෙතෙක් පැවති ව්යාජ ආගමික හා වාර්ගික සීමාවලින් ඔබ්බට ගොස් ඇත්තේ එබැවිනි.

I know that our generation and the previous generations before us have failed, but I do think the new generation will do justice to all our collective failures.

Abraham Lincoln was absolutely right when he said, "You can’t fool all the people all the time."

I am looking forward to seeing a better Sri Lanka soon.

I have seen people in my age blame the open market economy for all the failures in this country.

මම දැක්කා මගේ වයසේ අය මේ රටේ හැම අසාර්ථක කමකටම විවෘත වෙළෙඳපොළ ආර්ථිකයට බනිනවා.

ඔවුන්ගේ අඩු ප්‍රවේශය මට තේරුම් ගත හැක්කේ ඔවුන් පැරණි පරම්පරාව වන අප පසුකර ඇති දේ ඔවුන් දැක ඇති හෝ ඒවා හරහා ගොස් ඇති බැවිනි.

All what they have not realized is that without the open market, they would not have even had the social media platforms for their bullshitting today.

ඔවුන්ට නොතේරෙන එකම දෙය නම් විවෘත වෙළඳපොල නොවන්නට අද ඔවුන්ගේ ගොන් කතා සඳහා සමාජ මාධ්‍ය වේදිකා පවා නොතිබෙන්නට ඉඩ තිබූ බවයි.

The socialists do not create anything except discord.

සමාජවාදීන් අසමගිය සහ අසමගිය හැර අන් කිසිවක් නිර්මාණය කරන්නේ නැත.

When an entrepreneur in the open market creates something, the socialists immediately want a piece of the pie, and that too, the lion's share.

විවෘත වෙළඳපොලේ ව්‍යවසායකයෙකු යමක් නිර්මාණය කළ විට සමාජවාදීන්ට වහාම අවශ්‍ය වන්නේ කෑල්ලක්, එයද සිංහයාගේ කොටසයි.

This mindset has to change if the country has to change direction and set out on a developmental footing.

රට දිශානතිය වෙනස් කර සංවර්ධන අඩිපාරකට යාමට නම් මේ මානසිකත්වය වෙනස් විය යුතුය.

But I see a few very big obstacles to that.

නමුත් ඒ සඳහා ඉතා විශාල බාධා කිහිපයක් මා දකිනවා.

The first one is our education system.

පළමුවැන්න අපේ අධ්‍යාපන ක්‍රමයයි.

The second one is the socialists’ politicians.

දෙවැන්න සමාජවාදී දේශපාලනඥයන් ය.

The third one is the clergy.

තුන්වෙනි එක තමයි පූජ්‍ය පක්ෂය.

The younger generation is different, and they have fully embraced the digital revolution.

තරුණ පරම්පරාව වෙනස් වන අතර, ඔවුන් සම්පූර්ණයෙන්ම ඩිජිටල් විප්ලවය වැළඳගෙන ඇත.

They do not want to hang on to that so-called glorious past.

ඒ කීර්තිමත් අතීතයේ එල්ලී සිටීමට ඔවුන්ට අවශ්‍ය නැත.

Keeping abreast with the new trends and developments is their priority.

නව ප්‍රවණතා සහ වර්ධනයන් සමඟ සමීපව සිටීම ඔවුන්ගේ ප්‍රමුඛතාවයයි.

It is up to the younger generation to do the needful.

අවශ්‍ය දේ කිරීම තරුණ පරම්පරාවට භාරයි.

Now they have set the ball rolling and hope things will get better tomorrow.

Visiting "Gota Go Home" village by many well-known figures is a very positive sign, but it should not be allowed to turn into a carnival atmosphere by some revellers.
This has to be stopped immediately.

බොහෝ ප්‍රකට චරිත "ගෝටා ගෝ හෝම්" ගම්මානයට පැමිණීම ඉතා සාධනීය ලකුණකි, නමුත් එය සැණකෙළි වාතාවරණයක් බවට පත් කිරීමට සමහර විනෝදකාමීන්ට ඉඩ නොදිය යුතුය.
මෙය වහා නැවැත්විය යුතුයි.

I have seen many figures who should not have been in there now pretending to be supporting this cause were there.
We, as the previous generation, should go there to give them encouragement and protection, not direction.
Let the tide find its course.
That is nature's way.
