Weekend is Just a Luxury Only in Your Mind !

The weekend is something many are looking forward to.

Retirees, employed people, and even school-going children.

Just to have a good rest and recuperate.

Spend some quality time with your family and friends.

Many retire to bed, hoping for a change in the mood during the weekend.

Alas, the following morning you will be woken up by at least two bread sellers doing rounds with their blaring horns.

Then start the blaring horns from the nearby places of worship.

Now your morning is spoilt and you are forced to get down earlier than expected last night.

When the day comes, more noise polluters will make your weekend even worse.

They come in different forms.

Plant sellers, flower pot sellers, scrap metal collectors, you name it, and they come in different types and at different times.

Then some of the neighbours will start to do their home repairs in do-it-yourself style.

The noise continues unabated till lunchtime.

Have a decent meal and retire to bed. Again, you will be woken up by the same bread sellers doing their rounds in the neighbourhood.

And many more sellers with their blaring loudspeakers mounted on three wheels or Dimo බට්ටාs.

Again, you are forced to abandon your rest, thanks to all the noises they create in the neighbourhood.

Now it is time for your evening tea.

You settle for a sizzling cup of tea with a book in hand.

Then some of your neighbours will think of burning their accumulated household solid waste.

The entire neighbourhood will be engulfed in toxic fumes and ash.

You are now left with no other option other than to lock your doors and windows and act like a prisoner in your own house.

When are we going to change the situation and who is going to bell the cat?

It is likely that very little one can do individually unless we get together and form a consorted effort.

Until then, the so-called weekend is a luxury only in mind.

I used Google Translate to translate from English to Sinhala, and while the quality isn't as high as one might hope, most people will catch the gist of what's being stated.

Two young men riding on a Uva Province (UP) registered Motorbike were found behaving suspiciously with one of them with his phone in conversation with someone near the Buddha Statue in Mihindu Mawatha, Makumbura were stopped and questioned around 01.00 am this morning.

Initially, they were sticking to their story of coming to the area to look for some masonry work opportunities.

When requested to call the person that they were talking to a few minutes ago to verify their claim, both of their phones suddenly went dead and were unable to contact the person nor able to recall the contact number.

Immediately, both were handed over to someone with experience in real Police work and during his grilling, both admitted that they came to buy some prohibited substances being sold from someone here.

Both were warned not to sight this area again and allowed to go.

We should not be so worried about buyers but have to be on the lookout to expose who the real Seller living among us.

Let us collectively make this (Mihindu Mawatha) a clean neighbourhood to live in and not a playground for those who are involved in nefarious activities.

Teachers Industrial Action

Last night a friend of mine sent me a video in which a girl was lambasting teachers’ industrial action seeking better pay.

These are my responses to it given in dot points.

·         I fully agree with her argument that this is not the right time to start something like that as the whole world is grappling with an epidemic situation,

·         Having said that, one has to agree that teachers are one of the poorest paid professions in the country,

·         However, this profession has now become a refuge for most incompetent people,

·         This profession needs much better pay scales to attract talented and competent talents and not the residual found in the society,

·         At the same time, introduction of a way to measure and assess their outputs periodically have to incorporate into the system,

·         Allow foreign talents into areas where the same can’t be found locally,

·         That would help to raise the bar high in the profession,

·         But, are we ready for such drastic changes?

·         No, purely because of fear of losing vote bases and networks,

·         At present, even the local universities do not have any foreign teaching staffs like in many other parts of the developed world,

·         Therefore, it is difficult to think of even of having such changes in the primary and secondary level education structures,

·         You do not have to have a manmade event like a protracted war or natural calamity to make any nation disappear from the face of the earth,

·         Poor health and education are just enough and that is what is happening in this country and many other poor countries around the world,

·         The haves and able will seek refuge elsewhere by voting with their feet and poor frogs in the well will perish sooner than they think,

·         Remember, there will be a different world beyond the range of mountains surrounded your village,

·         Muster enough courage first to climb the mountain and then only one would realize that the so-called “paradise” that they have been made to believe and living in for centuries is not really a paradise after all.

Written with malice towards none.

Remembering Tony Suriya

Compared to the present set up Katunayake Airport was a little shack like in the early 80s when Tony & I joined aviation.

Like me, most of my other batch mates were straight out from college and into their first taste of money from a pay cheque.

But Tony was a few exceptions and his previous employment too was the same location, so he knew every nook and cranny the little shack which was like treasure trove to most of us.

We were privileged enough to get clearance to have access to all areas including most sterile areas.

I still remember him taking some of us to those areas and advising us the Dos & Don’t in those highly sensitive areas like a big brother in protective mode knowing well that some of us were brash, ignorant and stupid.

After the initial training of 6 months, he opted one path and I another but we remained in contact and friends.

A few years later, he got an assignment in one of the Middle Eastern airport and so he left shores.

I do not know what it was but a few more years I was invited into the same country and the same airport.

The old bridge was repaired and we had a good time again there together.

He was a very gentle and caring person to say the least.

He crawled up the ladder due to his diligence, hard work and honesty and was gracious enough to groom many local lads whom later grew up to be big shots in that organization.

Again we had to part due to his relocation to a nearby country with better privileges and prospects.

We met again a couple of more times whenever he visited for his official duties.

Later I came to know that he was taking an early retirement option due to some health grounds.

He returned back to the country and started his own training institute and when I finally hung my boots a few months later, he extended me an invitation to join his team, which I took up happily.

Ever since then, we remained in constant and did many fun things together.

But this time, when he suddenly left us all, I know there will be no more meeting again in this world.

I bid you good bye and wish you eternal peace, not knowing if we are ever to meet again somewhere some day,

Life is a precious gift

Life is a precious gift

And it is to be celebrated

And not to be muffled.

Those who are always on the sideline

Have nothing worthy of celebrating

And afraid of their own shadows

Will try to distract.

Let them embroiled in their own miseries

It is not your prerogative

To put them back on the right track.

Instead, live life and love life

And celebrate fully

The precious gift

Called life.

My (semi) Retirement Life !

For many years, I had been looking forward to reaching retirement age.

As I felt, it came faster than I expected because I really had a good time performing my tasks day in and day out.

However, after being in the so-called Rat Race for four decades, getting adjusted to the new lifestyle will be a somewhat hard thing initially for most, unless if you have not prepared yourself both mentally as well as physically to face the new challenges.

Retirement means No more schedules to meet and the current weather is no longer an issue and because of that, one is left with so much freedom and more time for indulgence.

I had no issues getting into the new Retired lifestyle and I did it like a duck in the water.

I had a few good habits cultivated in me long before this retirement saga began.

Reading is one of them and the rest, too, fit well into the extra available pace without any qualms.

Initially, most of my spare time was funnelled into initiating a few community-based projects in and around the neighbourhood and they were well received too.

Those efforts have helped me to, metaphorically speaking, building new bridges and repair old ones in the neighbourhood.

They were previously put on the backburner, obviously due to the nature and location of my employment.

Then came the pandemic, which gave most of us extra free time because many people's movements were restricted, and fun and outdoor activities were curtailed.

Despite having so much more free time in their hands now, many are still find unable to cope with the gift fallen from the sky above us.

I have seen on many social media sites where many are cursing the free time they are now endowed with.

One way for them to get their frustration and boredom out of their system is to flood social media sites with pictures of themselves as pious, patriots, and so on.

Then they go and indulge in many unhealthy activities and most of them are on the borderline of vice and unwise, yet have the audacity to post them everywhere, despite their previous claims of being very pious, patriotic and the list of Ps galore.

Instead of wasting their time and others too, these people should use this gift from above to upgrade themselves and be prepared for the next wave of things to unfold.

Use the same tool, the social media platforms that many are either being misused or underused to upgrade one’s skills rather than cursing everything under the sun from morning till night on social media platforms.

If coding is not one’s pot or kettle, then look for something that you are passionate about.

Look for a skill where it can be put to good use for a side hustle and make a few extra quid.

Once someone learns how to manage the available time well, many things will fall into the right places and complete the big picture.

Extra time in hand is not a curse but a blessing, but only if you know how to use it wisely.

Time is one commodity that has been fair to all living beings from the time it came into existence.

Therefore, use it wisely and reap the benefits.

Some Special Needs are Obvious and Some are Not.

Some special needs are obvious, while others aren't.

As someone who worked in aviation for several decades, I am well aware that almost all airports and airlines have special units set up to cater to travellers with obvious special needs.

But what about some special needs that are not visible but are just as important as those that are?

They have no physical symptoms and include learning disabilities, mental health issues, mobility issues, and speech, visual, and hearing impairments.

Asthma, COPD, PTSD, anxiety, lung conditions, chronic illnesses, renal failure, diabetes, and sleep disorders are examples of diseases that can significantly impair and impact one's day-to-day life.

Those with such specific but obscure needs frequent airports and airlines.

Airlines do not make money while their planes are parked, so adhering to their published schedule is critical if they want to be successful.

Time is an important factor in aviation, and their performance may be hampered when dealing with passengers who have less obvious special needs.

How can we tell if someone has a hidden but non-obvious special need?

The Hidden Special Needs Sunflower was designed and launched in 2016 after London Gatwick Airport realized that they needed some kind of early warning mechanism to avoid affecting the airport's performance due to such passengers.

A lanyard with a simple sunflower design on a green background is a subtle but visible signal to airport staff that the wearer (or someone with them) may require some extra help, time, or assistance when moving through the airport.

Wearing the sunflower lanyard alerts others that assistance may be required. The amount of assistance required may differ from person to person.

It could be as simple as a lack of time, comprehension, or both.

We should believe that while everyone is equal, they are not the same.

So, the next time you see someone wearing a sunflower lanyard, you'll know it's an indication and prompt intervention that could benefit both the wearer and the service being provided.

Instead of asking what the hidden special needs are, ask how you can help.

The Hidden Special Needs Sunflower's success and positive response have raised awareness of the challenges that both adults and children with hidden special needs can face.

Disguised Special Needs Sunflower wearers are now more widely benefiting from assistance in making their daily lives a little easier, and not only airports but also other large establishments provide this service.

Preventing the misuse of free or minimal-cost services requires a combination of technical measures, user policies, and monitoring.

Here are some steps that can be taken:

User Registration and Verification:

Implement a registration process that requires users to provide valid contact information.

Use email or phone number verification to ensure users are legitimate.

Terms of Use and Acceptable Use Policy:

Clearly define the terms of use and an acceptable use policy for the service.

Clearly state the prohibited activities, such as misuse, fraud, harassment, etc.

Account Monitoring:

Employ automated systems to detect unusual or suspicious behaviour.

Set up alerts for unusual activities that might indicate misuse.

Rate Limiting and Usage Quotas:

Implement rate limiting to prevent excessive usage by a single user.

Moderation and Reporting:

Implement reporting mechanisms that allow to report misuse.

Have a moderation team to review and take appropriate action accordingly.

User Behavior Analysis:

Monitor user behaviour patterns to identify suspicious or abnormal activities.

Apply machine learning algorithms to detect anomalies in user behaviour.

Authentication and Identity Verification:

Implement multi-factor authentication to ensure users are who they claim to be.

For sensitive services, consider identity verification through official documents.

Regular Audits:

Conduct periodic audits of user accounts and activities to identify and deactivate suspicious accounts.

Legal Measures:

Include clauses in your terms of use that allow you to take legal action against those who misuse your service.

Cooperate with law enforcement agencies when serious misuse occurs.

Educational Efforts:

Provide users with information about responsible and legitimate ways to use the service.

Educate users about the potential consequences of misuse.

Feedback Loops:

Encourage feedback from users about the service's performance and misuse concerns.

Use this feedback to continuously improve your anti-misuse measures.

It's important to strike a balance between preventing misuse and ensuring a positive user experience.

Overly strict measures can deter genuine users, while insufficient measures can lead to rampant misuse.

Regularly review and update your strategies based on the evolving landscape of user behaviour.

Best Way to Beat Toyota !

The best protection for any virus related diesis is to boost your own immunity system while adhering to recommended safe practices.

No amount of prescribed medication will help you.

The other most important aspect of the game is to have a positive mind and live stress-free life at least during the infected times.

The present situation is the same and I think it had gone into this proportion due to the combination of all above in varying degree.

Nowadays, social media is awash with so much muck regarding the current health situation in the world.

Some think that flooding seemingly useful information would help others but they are not.

Their intentions may be pure and bona fide, but in the end, it would have the right opposite of the desired effect intended.

What they usually do is affect your inner peace and increase your stress level.

This situation is good for fear mongers many are still gullible.

I am not an expert on any of those matters, but the only advice I can give you based on my approach is to the situation is not to dig into so many details on the crisis at hand.

If it is to come, it will come no matter how many precautions one would take.

That is how nature works.

And if it is to come, then let the body’s own defence system battles it out and defeats it, because there is no other way out.

But if the attacker wins, then it can be called whatever one wants to call it, but I am not going to name them.

Read a book, do something that will put one’s mind at ease or learn a new trick, as all of us now have so much free time than just flooding social media with seemingly useful but in fact of No Use information.

Bringing one’s stress level down is one’s own responsibility that would in the end boost the body’s own immune system.

And this would greatly help the system to run the battle for you, but not reading and or flooding seemingly useful but in the end, nothing but real muck around, upsetting your and others well-being in the end.

The Choice is yours only.
