Thinking Loud ( a midst Corona epidemic)

• Presidential pardon instrument should not be abused to release Killers who are serving their sentence for heinous crimes committed,

• මිනීමරුවෙක් නිදහස් කර මට, කලුකඩ කාරයා මහ කජ්ජක්ද?

• Why can't banks switch their Debit cards to Credit card as a temporary measure until the crisis situation is under control?

• No qualm of Appreciation of something needed to be appreciated;. But sudden surfacing of hypocrites in high numbers living in other parts of the world on social media is a worrying sign (at least) to me.

• Why confuse people with foreign measuring units. Arm's length is a good measure even in a literary sense.

• The recent Kapruka incident proved again my long-held notion that to be successful in business in Sri Lanka; one has to be a crook.

• Over-reliance on the military in a serious health crisis has exacerbated the situation even more.

• For the first time in the history of Mankind, the Coronavirus has managed to prove the theory of "Together We Win" is wrong.

• What would it be called in 9 months’ time? Corona Boom!

Anytime DATA - Sri Lanka Telecom

Most Internet providers allocate Data for a connection, split into two segments.

A certain portion is for Day use and the remaining is for Night use.

Unfortunately, the Day portion is smaller compared to the Night allocation.

However, whether one uses the entire allocation or not within the given billing period, the service provider will be charging for both used and unused segments, unless if the user had not exceeded the allocation.

It is not a good business practice and especially when there is a lockdown in many parts of the world due to the epidemic situation.

The Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) is no different and time to change their stance when many well-known businesses around are opening their gates to be able to access their other portals otherwise only possible by subscription.

Neither the user nor the service provided will be harmed if they can switch to Anytime Data mode than still continuing with a very archaic business model.

Over to you, if anyone with the authority to do the change is listening.

Looking for a Scapegoat is not Real Forward Thinking.

Looking for a scapegoat is not real forward-thinking.

At a time when the rest of the World is looking for answers to deal with the Corona epidemic, looking for a scapegoat is not going to solve the issue.

If the person who has returned to the country from Italy a few weeks ago and sought treatments for some other ailment from a government-run medical facility but alleged to have failed to divulge full details is found, he will be lynched by many.

Even the authorities are on the same page with those who are calling for his blood but they have gone a step further by suggesting all his immovable properties to be confiscated even.

Is this the way forward?

I do not think so.

If the failures are to be counted, then the number one citizen of the country should be on the top of the list for failing to close all borders immediately when the experienced professionals were asking him to do so but waited for all his family & friends' kith and kin to return from aboard to go ahead.

So is that member of the parliament and well-known drug dealer for instigating and stopping the efforts to turn one of the government-run hospital facility to a quarantine facility to deal with suspected corona infected cases.

Despite the curfew and ban of people gathering in numbers, many politicians have organized their political rallies.

Some have even conducted Bodhi Puja, some went on dispensing Holy Water and some others distributing face masks and finally given the one he had been wearing all day to another person.

The way forward is to admit failures and to address them in such a way not to repeat them again in future.

Do not just look for a lower place to let the water flow.

Child Getting Used to New Identity

This is based on a true incident.


While being admitted to Grade One class, parents were told by the Class teacher that the child would be addressed henceforth by her second name instead of her commonly used name.

The parents were shocked and the hapless child protested vehemently but no avail.

The reason for this decision was based on having another child with the same name already in the class registry.

Now the child is registered under her second name which has never been used in any open conversations hitherto, except for documentation purposes only.

The parents are from not so affluent backgrounds and with limited education, hence despite their misgivings had to accept the Class teacher’s decision finally.

No doubt, the child would get used being called another name over the years and without any adverse psychological issues later due to this trauma.

There are a few questions still plague me, after hearing the incident from them recently and the purpose of posting this is to seek answers than ridicule or look down on anyone.

These are the questions and I am sure someone with enough knowledge and expertise will enlighten me and many other like minded readers.

• Has the Class teacher got the authority to change someone’s commonly used name for such a flimsy reason?

• What if the child in question had no second name?

• What sort of psychological issues child would have to encounter and overcome getting used to a totally new identity?

• What sort of action parents can take to correct the situation than giving into the Class teacher’s whims?

Three Wheeler Mafia is a menace to the Society

There are some videos now being shared on social media sites where Three Wheeler hooligans harass and man handle some other legitimate taxi service providers.

One such guy who had been harassed and possibly even attacked have now gone to the area reserved for those who want to express their grievances peacefully and staging a one man protest to get the authorities attention to a very common problem faced by many.

The Three Wheeler Mafia is a menace to the society and it should be eradicated soon.

But the question is will the authorities do anything to correct the situation.

The plain answer is No.

They will not.

The reason is that that is their bedrock of voters.

Not only those who are riding on them but many others who have the same mentality of Three Wheel riders supporting politicians.

Therefore in the very likelihood that they will not be disciplined.

In a such a scenario what the general public who are concerned about the deteriorating law and order situation in the country can do now?

• Use public transport as much as possible,

• If in a rare occasion, one has to ride on it, avoid riding on ones that are without proper Meter,

• Report if any abuse.

It will get little time to get the traction of our collective efforts but it will eventually come.

But if we let it go as it is, the situation is going to deteriorate more and then we have to obey their rules than anything else.

If the boycott or effective selection process is being adopted by many,  soon they will start getting the pressure on them too.

When Debt Collectors started calling on them only they will realize.

Then they will have two choices.

Either adopt according to the Market requirements or perish.

As the general public we should be more active too.

A few things that we can do now to change the Mafia grip.

• Use business apps for all our rides,

• Chose Metered Taxis over unmetered ones,

• Demand to have Owner & the driver’s details as well as the current registration is clearly displayed in the passenger cabin, in case if a need arise to report some issue.

The changes are hard to come by, only if we keep our silence.

Do not be afraid of demanding your rights always.
