The peaceful protest has been going on for more than a month on the Galle Face Green in Sri Lanka, and after authorities failed to disperse the people by threats, intimidation, and finally violence, now they are trying to fox the general public by cooking up another story. What is the hurry now?  For more than seven decades, people in this country desired a wise representative, but all they did was choose one crook over another and wait for mythical characters ( දිය සේන, රාවණා) to come and rescue us. If anyone wants real change, this is the right time and the opportunity too. That does not mean going out and protesting. It is possible for some, but not for all. All you have to do now is to look inward and change or throw away the coloured glasses you have been wearing and support one crook or another blindly. No doubt the ideologies are hard to change. O ur wedding was scheduled for July 30, 1987, and what occurred after Rajiv was hit by a naval rating is now history. If you can do it on a regular basis, turning the other cheek is a really valuable trait. However, when your hormone levels are at their highest and you're fighting to suppress impulses, a small provocation or nudge might easily break anyone's self-control. This is how I interpret some of the recent events in the country. When I mention some of the incidents, I don't imply that burnings and looting are included. Protests in various parts of the country were completely peaceful for three weeks. Then there's the question of how it became something else. The triggering point was some unwanted people turning up with improvised arms and beating up protestors who were trying to protect their grounds. To add insult to injury, authorities who were expected to ensure law and order were preserved at all costs did so by turning a blind eye or siding with armed mercenaries sent by politicians. Some people on social media are asking where law and order are in the country today, and I believe it is an important question to ask. To dissect the issue well, a few questions need to be answered first. The first one is who is supposed to ensure law and order in a country. Is it with the government in power or with someone else? Obviously, we have an elected government in power currently and if they have failed to ensure and enforce law and order in the country, then blaming the third party for their failure is not called for, in my opinion. Second, using persons who have been condemned to prison to beat up on unarmed protestors is a clear indicator of who is breaching the law and order in the country. Thirdly, the timing of the call and who is making it now are important to explore. Those who are very vociferous on social media now, were in a deep slumber when the present government was blatantly breaking it daily. At 7:53 AM, April 30th, 1975 the last helicopter took its wings, carrying Major Kean and 10 Marine Security Guards. This helicopter landed on USS Okinawa at 8:30 AM.   A few things people can do when police try to bundle them into police vans.  Do not fight back. Otherwise, the police will try to add one or more charges to the sheet. Disorderly conduct, Resisting arrest, Ask the reason for the arrest. Police are required to provide a reason for their actions rather than simply loading people into buses and jeeps. Obtain the name and staff number of the police officer (preferably on video) trying the arrest. Again, they are duty-bound to part with the information requested. Blunt refusal could lead them to break their internal code of conduct and, most importantly, the constitution. Having credible video evidence can be used later to prove human rights violations, damage claims, and so on. I am not someone with a legal background and use common sense only. Watching from afar what is going on in Sri Lanka, I have a very mixed feeling. I was saddened to see the difficulties the people have to endure and was not able to participate in person due to my present circumstances. Furthermore, the inaction by those who have been sent by the people to the legislature to sort out such things so far. For a few reasons, I am happy too. The first one is to see that, finally, many people in the country are feeling the power of collective bargaining. And the hegemony that was created by politicians and those who are in robes for their own benefits is being broken slowly but surely. The third reason is that I was able to predict the trajectory of many things a few years ago and am glad that I have put them in writing here. Being able to be ahead of the curve is something I can’t be very happy about, but not in these circumstances, which is why it was a very mixed feeling overall. Politics, whether some people like it or not, will, unfortunately, have an effect on everyone. It won't help if you behave ostrich-like. You either defend what you perceive to be true or deny what you feel to be false. When many people want to play the ostrich roll, others must step in and keep the ball rolling. What's stopping us from doing the same, just like Ostriches? Because, unlike those selfish ostriches, we care. Playing it safe like Ostriches opts to do is the easiest approach to get the benefits in either case. Ostriches observe things in this way. Some interesting animal facts will help shed light on their behaviour as well. The ostrich's eyes are about the size of billiard balls. They take up so much room in the skull that the ostrich's brain is actually smaller than either one of its eyeballs.
