Colombo Red Mosque / āļĸාāļ¸ි āļ‹āļŊ්-āļ…āļŊ්āˇ†āļģ් āļ´āļŊ්āļŊිāļē

The Colombo Red Mosque, also known as the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, is a historical mosque located in the heart of Colombo, the commercial capital of Sri Lanka. It is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city, thanks to its striking red and white striped façade and minaret.

The mosque was built in 1908 by the Muslim community in Colombo, led by H.L. Abdul Gaffoor, a prominent local businessman and philanthropist. The design of the mosque was inspired by the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, which combines elements of Indian and Islamic architecture.

The mosque's most distinctive feature is its minaret, which stands at 92 feet tall and is topped with a golden crescent. The minaret is designed to resemble the minarets of the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq, which is known for its iconic spiral staircase.

The interior of the mosque is just as impressive as its exterior. The prayer hall is adorned with intricate geometric patterns and calligraphy and is illuminated by a series of stained glass windows. The central dome is decorated with a beautiful floral motif, and the pulpit is made of carved wood.

The mosque is not just a place of worship; it is also a symbol of the Muslim community's contribution to the cultural and economic life of Colombo. The surrounding area is home to many Muslim-owned businesses, including textile shops, jewellery stores, and restaurants.

Despite its historical and cultural significance, the Colombo Red Mosque has also been the site of controversy. In 2013, a group of Buddhist monks protested outside the mosque, calling for its demolition. The incident highlighted tensions between Sri Lanka's Muslim and Buddhist communities, which have flared up in recent years.

The Colombo Red Mosque remains an important landmark in Sri Lanka's capital city, a testament to the country's multicultural heritage and the enduring legacy of its Muslim community.
