A Tribute to Judge Frank Caprio
The passing of Judge Frank Caprio has left the world without one of its most compassionate voices. Known globally as the “internet judge,” his unique blend of fairness, empathy, and humanity made him an icon far beyond the courtroom. For many, including myself, his rulings were more than legal decisions—they were lessons in kindness and understanding.
I had once hoped to meet him in person. During a visit to the United
States, my family and I drove from New Jersey to Boston, with plans to stop in
Providence, Rhode Island, specifically to see Judge Caprio. Finding the
municipal courthouse proved difficult until a policeman, realising who we
sought, smiled and told his colleague, “Oh, that famous internet Judge,”
before pointing us in the right direction.
At the courthouse parking lot, another officer, upon learning that we had
come all the way from Sri Lanka to see Judge Caprio, kindly escorted me inside.
Unfortunately, the judge was on leave that day. A staff member, noticing my
disappointment, handed me a yellow stick-on note with Judge Caprio’s personal
mobile number written on it, suggesting I call ahead if I wished to arrange a
meeting.
That meeting never happened. Today, that little yellow note remains a
reminder of what could have been. What endures, however, are Judge Caprio’s
timeless lessons. Through his televised cases, he reminded the world that the
law, when tempered with compassion, can uplift rather than punish. He showed us
that behind every case lies a human story deserving of dignity.
Judge Caprio’s courtroom was never about theatrics or severity. It was
about humanity. Whether dealing with a struggling parent, an elderly citizen,
or a nervous first-time offender, he found ways to apply the law while
extending grace. In doing so, he elevated the meaning of justice itself.
His legacy is not confined to Providence, nor even to the United States.
Through the power of modern media, he touched millions across the globe,
inspiring them to believe that compassion has a rightful place in authority.
Judge Frank Caprio’s passing is a profound loss, but his spirit will
continue to guide those who value kindness as the highest form of justice. May
his soul rest in eternal peace.
