Latest reported quarter: 30 June 2026

1. Fundamental analysis summary

Lion Brewery's fundamentals show improving revenue, earnings and profitability: for the financial year ended 31 March 2026, reported revenue reached approximately LKR 132.43 billion and net income rose to LKR 11.19 billion, while the June 2026 quarter also recorded year-on-year growth in sales and earnings. These results support a positive assessment of operating performance, although valuation, taxation, cash generation and future earnings sustainability still need to be examined before judging the attractiveness of the share price.

2. Three fundamental strengths

Strength 1 — Strong revenue and earnings growth

FY 2025 revenue

LKR 123.31 bn

FY 2026 revenue

LKR 132.43 bn

FY 2025 net profit

LKR 9.51 bn

FY 2026 net profit

LKR 11.19 bn

Annual revenue grew by approximately 7.4%, while net profit increased by 17.7%. Earnings per share (EPS) rose from LKR 118.86 to LKR 139.93, an increase of approximately 17.7%. Profit growth exceeding revenue growth indicates improved overall earnings performance, although the contribution of finance income and operating margins should also be examined.

Strength 2 — Strong operating cash generation

The FY 2025/26 annual report records group net cash generated from operating activities of approximately LKR 19.78 billion, compared with LKR 14.24 billion in the previous financial year. The year-end cash balance was reported at approximately LKR 18.2 billion, up 54.2% year on year.

This provides evidence that the company is generating substantial cash from its business, supporting working capital, investment and potential shareholder distributions. However, capital expenditure, borrowing balances and other cash commitments must be considered before estimating freely available cash.

Strength 3 — Established brands and a substantial business

Lion Brewery has established beer brands, domestic distribution, export operations and partnerships involving international beverage brands. Its subsidiaries include Millers Brewery Limited and Lion Beer Pte Ltd., Singapore.

This established business platform provides scale, brand recognition and multiple routes to market. The company's continued profitability despite a highly taxed operating environment is a positive fundamental indicator, though brand strength alone does not guarantee future earnings growth.

3. Two risks or watch points

Risk 1 — Excise duties, taxation and consumer affordability

Alcoholic beverages are subject to substantial taxation and regulatory restrictions in Sri Lanka. Lion Brewery's FY 2025/26 report states that the group paid approximately LKR 103.8 billion in total taxes, including approximately LKR 67.8 billion in excise duties.

Higher taxes can raise retail prices, reduce legal-market volumes, push consumers to cheaper alternatives, and limit the company's ability to pass higher costs on to customers. The company itself identifies taxation and affordability as important industry challenges.

Risk 2 — Share valuation and dividend sustainability

Improving profits do not automatically make LION.N0000 an attractive investment at every market price. A share can be fundamentally sound but expensive relative to its earnings, net assets, growth prospects or dividend income.

The annual dividend for FY 2025/26 was LKR 39.90 per share, compared with LKR 46.00 in FY 2024/25. That is a reduction of approximately 13.3%, despite higher annual EPS. This does not by itself indicate financial weakness, but income-focused investors should examine the reasons for the change and the company's future capital-allocation plans.

Important limitation: I could not reliably establish a verified CSE closing price for 9 October 2026 from the available sources. I therefore will not invent a current P/E ratio, price-to-book ratio, dividend yield or target price.

4. Latest quarterly performance: June 2026

Year-on-year quarterly earnings growth

Comparison of the June quarters, in LKR billions.

Chart

■ June 2025

■ June 2026

Revenue rose by about 15.1%, net income by 17.5%, and EPS by about 17.5% year on year. This is encouraging, but one quarter cannot establish a long-term trend. The next quarterly reports should confirm whether the company can maintain this

5. One thing to track going forward

Track whether earnings growth translates into sustainable free cash flow while beer sales volumes remain resilient.

For the next two or three quarterly results, monitor:

  • Revenue and sales-volume growth.
  • EPS growth and operating profit margins.
  • Operating cash flow after working-capital movements and capital expenditure.
  • Changes in excise duties and other taxes.
  • Dividends relative to earnings and cash generation.

If earnings and cash generation continue to improve without a significant deterioration in sales volumes or financial strength, the fundamental case would be reinforced.

6. Overall fundamental quality

MODERATE

Fundamentals only

Lion Brewery demonstrates strong recent earnings growth, meaningful operating cash generation and an established business. These are positive indicators of fundamental business quality.

I use MODERATE rather than STRONG as the overall assessment because the substantial tax burden creates ongoing operating risk, the annual dividend has declined, and the current market valuation has not been verified sufficiently to establish whether the share offers an attractive margin of safety.

This is a cautious classification reflecting the limits of the available valuation evidence, not a conclusion that the business is financially weak.
