The phrase "Back to School" refers to the time of year when students of all ages return to educational institutions after an extended break, such as summer vacation or a holiday break.
It is the
time of year when schools and universities reopen their doors and students,
teachers, and staff resume their normal routines of learning, teaching, and
working.
It can be
an exciting time for students as they reconnect with old classmates, meet new
teachers, and begin a new academic year full of opportunities for growth and
learning.
But in Sri
Lanka, it has a different take altogether.
Usually,
past pupils of an educational institute get together, dressed alike in their
previous uniforms, and have a reunion.
Some of
these events are amusing, with senior citizens dressed up in freshly stitched
uniforms and a "water bottle" dangling from their necks.
Reunions
will be a fantastic experience, and being able to revisit some of their
favourite parts of their alma mater for a short period of time will allow them
to rekindle and live in the unforgettable past for a short period of time.
But I could
not help but wonder why we can’t channel this positive energy into a charitable
event.
Instead of
wearing a freshly stitched uniform, former students will donate money to a "uniform
fund" where needy children in the institute can be assisted.
This is
something that alumni associations with educational institutions should
consider if it hasn't already been done.
This is not
to say that such wonderful meetups should be avoided, but rather that they
should be used in such a way that the objectives of such meetups are met while
also incorporating a charitable drive.
It will be a "win-win" situation.
