The Bee Hummingbird, also known as the Mellisuga Helena, is the smallest bird in the world.
It is found exclusively in Cuba and measures just
2.25 inches (5.7 centimetres) long and weighs only 0.056 ounces (1.6 grams).
Its size makes it one of the most fascinating and
unique birds on the planet.
The Bee Hummingbird is known for its vibrant and
colourful feathers, which are a combination of green and pink iridescence.
The male birds have a more striking appearance,
with a bright red head and throat, while the females have a more subdued
colouration.
Despite their small size, Bee Hummingbirds are
highly active and have a high metabolism, which requires them to consume large
amounts of nectar every day.
They use their long, curved beaks to reach the
nectar in flowers and feed on insects and spiders for protein.
The Bee Hummingbird has a unique courtship ritual,
where the males perform an aerial dance to impress females.
During this display, the male will fly up to 130
feet (40 meters) into the air and then dive towards the female, producing a
loud whistling sound with its wings.
Unfortunately, the Bee Hummingbird is currently
classified as a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and predation by
introduced species such as cats and rats.
Conservation efforts are underway to protect their
habitats and ensure the survival of this remarkable bird species.
