Elephant Treats & Electric Fences: Witnessing Wildness in Udawalawe

Welcome to Udawalawe National Park, a sanctuary for incredible wildlife.

Here, along the roadside, a fascinating, albeit controversial, scene unfolds.

These majestic wild elephants, though accustomed to human presence near the park's edge, are truly wild.

Driven perhaps by curiosity or the lure of an easy treat, they often approach the electric fence.

Despite regulations strictly prohibiting the feeding of wild animals, a roadside economy has sprung up.

Vendors offer fruits like bananas, sugarcane, and watermelon, catering to those who wish to interact with these gentle giants.

The elephants, for their part, seem to tolerate, even enjoy, the attention and the offerings.

It's a captivating interaction, a blend of the wild and the human.

However, it's crucial to remember the purpose of this electric fence: to protect both the elephants and the public.

Maintaining a safe distance is paramount.

Getting too close for a selfie or to offer food directly is dangerous and disrespectful to these wild creatures.

While the sight of these magnificent animals so close to the road is undeniably special.

Let's always prioritise their well-being and respect the park's regulations.

Observe, admire from a safe distance, and remember that their wildness is what makes them so extraordinary.
