Why Facebook Hates Your External Links (And How to Fix It)

In many Sri Lankan restaurants, you’ll see a familiar sign: “Outside Food Not Allowed.” The logic is simple: they are running a business.

If you occupy a seat but eat food from elsewhere, they lose a potential sale and a table for a paying customer.

Social media platforms operate on the exact same principle.

Facebook, in particular, wants to keep you scrolling on their app, not clicking away to an external website.

The Algorithm Problem

If you include an external link in your main post, Facebook’s algorithm won't necessarily delete it, but it will throttle its reach.

It becomes a "ghost post", visible to a few, but promoted to almost no one.

The "Comment Section" Workaround

If you have a link you must share, there is a strategic way to bypass this restrictive gate.

Here is the blueprint:

  1. Post Native Content Only: Upload your text and high-quality images directly to the post without any external links attached.
  2. Use a "Call to Action": At the end of your post, write something like, “Check the comments for more details!” or “Link in the second comment.”
  3. The "Second Comment" Strategy: * Address your first comment to your followers or "Top Fans" to encourage engagement.
    • Place your external link in the second comment. By keeping the main post "link-free," the algorithm views it as native content and allows it to circulate normally. This simple shift can significantly increase your impressions and engagement.

A Quick Fact Check & Tip

  • Does it work? Yes. Marketing data consistently shows that "Link in Comment" posts maintain higher organic reach than "Link in Post" updates.
  • The "Edit" Hack: Another common method is to publish the post without a link, wait 5–10 minutes, and then edit the post to add the link. However, the "Comment Method" you suggested is often safer and more transparent for your audience.

Since you're looking to maximize reach, have you noticed if using specific keywords in the main post also affects how much Facebook promotes your content to non-followers?

Have you tried this method yet? I’d love to hear about your reach and results in the comments below!
