Three Sisters Farming Method.

The "Three Sisters" approach is an ancient method of companion planting developed by the Indigenous peoples of the Americas, particularly the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) and various tribes across Mesoamerica.

Instead of planting crops in isolated, single-species rows (monoculture), this method involves growing three specific crops in close proximity so they can benefit one another.

The three "sisters" are corn (maize), climbing beans, and winter squash. When planted together, they create a highly efficient, self-sustaining ecosystem.

Here is how each plant contributes to the group's survival:

1. Corn (The Support)

Corn is the "older sister." It grows tall and strong, providing a natural vertical structure for the climbing beans to wind their way up. This eliminates the need to build artificial trellises or poles.

2. Beans (The Fertiliser)

Beans are the "giving sister." As legumes, they absorb nitrogen from the air and, with the help of symbiotic bacteria (rhizobia) in their roots, convert it into a form that plants can use. This essentially fertilises the soil, ensuring the heavy-feeding corn and squash receive the nutrients they need to thrive.

3. Squash (The Protector)

Squash is the "protecting sister." Its large, broad leaves spread out and cover the ground like a living mulch. This blocks sunlight from reaching the soil, which prevents weeds from growing and helps the earth retain moisture during hot summer days. Additionally, the prickly vines and leaves of the squash plant help deter pests, such as raccoons and deer, from reaching the corn and beans.

Dietary Synergy

Beyond their agricultural harmony, the Three Sisters also provide a remarkable nutritional synergy. When consumed together, they offer a completely balanced diet:

  • Corn provides essential carbohydrates for energy.

  • Beans are rich in protein and amino acids that corn lacks.

  • Squash contributes critical vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats (from the seeds).

This brilliant, sustainable farming technique enabled early Indigenous communities to maximise their crop yields in limited space while maintaining the long-term health of the soil.
