The Folkloric and Vernacular Traditions: Cobra Envenomation

In contrast to the serene, highly ritualised passing described in monastic literature, vernacular folk narratives present a sudden and tragic cause of death centred on envenomation

Late regional historical compilations and folk manuscripts associated with variants of the Rajavaliya preserve a tradition wherein King Dutugemunu was struck down by a venomous serpent

According to these accounts, a Naga—a mythological serpent entity possessing shape-shifting capabilities—transformed itself into a cobra and concealed itself within a decorated coconut-leaf pavilion (coconut pandal) erected for a royal ceremony

As the king passed beneath or inspected the ceremonial structure, the hidden cobra bit him on the head, delivering a fatal dose of venom.

This envenomation narrative is reinforced by local oral traditions and indigenous medical lineages in the North-Central Province, particularly in the vicinity of the Koranaka Sandagala Tampita Rajamaha Viharaya in Korasagalla, near Kekirawa

Local lore maintains that following the cobra bite, the king was rushed to toxicological specialists (sarpavisha vedas) residing in Korasagalla

Traditional Ayurvedic and Hela Vedakama physicians in this region claim direct descent from the royal medical guild that administered antivenom therapies and specialised herbal poultices to the stricken monarch

While these regional histories disagree on whether the treatments successfully prolonged his life or ultimately failed, they demonstrate a deeply rooted historical memory linking Dutugemunu to severe serpent envenomation.
