In recent years, viral social media claims have circulated online, suggesting that advanced LiDAR technology has uncovered a "huge hidden city" buried beneath the fortress complex. 

While cutting-edge remote sensing and 3D documentation technologies have indeed been applied to Sigiriya, distinguishing between actual scientific research and exaggerated internet lore is crucial. This article separates verified archaeological data from hyperbole, exploring the genuine history of LiDAR and 3D laser-scanning projects at Sigiriya.

1. The Real History: "Digitising Our Heritage" (2017–2018)

The most robust, documented evidence of LiDAR technology being utilized at Sigiriya stems from the "Digitizing Our Heritage" project conducted between 2017 and 2018. 

This collaborative initiative brought together several leading scientific and preservation bodies:

Scope of the Survey

Beyond drone-based aerial mapping, Sigiriya has also been the subject of targeted, microscopic-level surface documentation. Researchers applied advanced non-contact technologies specifically to the world-famous Sigiriya frescoes, utilizing:

By fusing these three distinct datasets, specialists generated an exceptionally high-resolution 3D digital twin of the painted rock pocket surfaces. Sri Lankan archaeological literature discussing remote-sensing initiatives confirms that the 2017–2018 project pioneered LiDAR application locally. Yet, experts emphasize an essential distinction: the initiative was fundamentally a monument-mapping and digitization exercise. Systematic, wide-scale airborne LiDAR archaeological prospection designed to unearth completely hidden settlement topologies across the entire surrounding jungle canopy remains much more limited in scope.
