Dunning-Kruger Effect

Image
The Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people with limited knowledge or skill overestimate their own competence and ability. This phenomenon was named after social psychologists David Dunning and Justin Kruger, who described it for the first time in 1999. According to the Dunning-Kruger effect, people who lack knowledge or skills in a certain area are often unable to identify their own limitations and exaggerate their own talents. This can lead to poor decision-making and performance of tasks relating to that subject. Individuals with high levels of knowledge and competence in a certain sector, on the other hand, may underestimate their abilities and expertise due to the presumption that others have similar qualities. Overall, the Dunning-Kruger effect emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and the necessity of acknowledging one's own limitations in order to progress and flourish in a certain subject. The First Ever Temple of the Tooth Relic in Sri Lanka

Image
Some little-known historical facts about the first ever "Temple of the Tooth Relic" of the Gautam Buddha in Sri Lanka. In the fourth century CE, King Guhasiva of Kalinga in India possessed a precious relic, a Buddha's tooth. For hundreds of years, the tooth was thought to confer a divine right to govern whoever owned it, causing political unrest. Fearing that the object of his Buddhist worship might be removed from him violently, the King discreetly sent the tooth away with Princess Hemamali and her spouse, Prince Danthakumara . Legend has it that they travelled to Sri Lanka disguised and with the tooth hidden in Princess Hemamali's hair. Some accounts place their arrival in Sri Lanka at Trincomalee, while others place it at Welitota or present-day Balapitiya. Pali Dalada Vansaya, or the Chronicle of the Tooth Relic , records the legend that they landed in Balapitiya, at the mouth of the Maduganga estuary. According to legend, the pair hid the tooth in a...

The tower stands at a height of 29 meters and has a range of 18 nautical miles, making it an important navigational aid for ships entering the harbour. The original Colombo lighthouse was located on a bastion on the ocean edge of the fort, was a neo-classical structure, with a 23 m (75 ft) wooden light tower rising from a two-story circular brick building and surrounded by an elaborate colonnade. It was erected in 1829 and subsequently demolished with the removal of the fort ra...

It is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city, thanks to its striking red and white striped façade and minaret. The mosque was built in 1908 by the Muslim community in Colombo, led by H.L. Abdul Gaffoor, a prominent local businessman and philanthropist. The design of the mosque was inspired by the Indo-Saracenic style of architecture, which combines elements of Indian and Islamic architecture. The mosque's most distinctive feature is its minaret, which stands at 92 feet tall and is topped with a golden crescent. The minaret is designed to resemble the minarets of the Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq, which is known for its iconic spiral staircase. The interior of the mosque is just as impressive as its exterior. The prayer hall is adorned with intricate geometric patterns and calligraphy and is illuminated by a serie...
